I read this piece that Tyler Perry recently wrote, which explains a part of his past when he was really in the less fortunate bracket, and it really moved me.  It gave me hope, once again, in that anything is possible.  It’s so important to work towards something great in life and to truly appreciate where you come from and the experiences that God brings you through along the way.  Check out why Tyler Perry is so appreciative and humbled by being able to open a simple thing such as his kitchen cabinet.  He posted on Facebook:

I USED TO BE AFRAID TO OPEN MY KITCHEN CABINETS
I have lived in this house for almost 7 years and today it hit me.  I mean this blew my mind.
I went to my kitchen cabinet today, got a glass, poured some water in it, and drank it. I realized in that moment that I am no longer afraid to open my kitchen cabinets.
It brought tears to my eyes. Ok, before you think I’m crazy let me tell you why. W…hen I was a little boy I wouldn’t dare take a glass out of the cabinet and drink from it without washing it first. The roaches had crawled all over them and the rats would leave droppings all around them. It was bad. I hated going into our kitchen, especially at night. It was scary. When I turned on the light there was no telling what I would see. Rats bigger than shoes, roaches everywhere. I remember being afraid to open the kitchen drawers because mice would jump out and run, and we really tried to keep it clean.  So you know from a boy to a man I carried some of that fear with me.  So to think that I have been taking glasses out of these cabinets for years, and opening my kitchen drawers without fear is a blessing. Being able to turn the lights on in the kitchen at night and not be ready to run… I’m telling you God is good. Now I know some of y’all are not going to be able to appreciate this. But to all of us who came from it, you know what I’m talking about. And to all of y’all who don’t get it, I thank God you didn’t grow up that way.  And to the ones who may still be there right now, I’m going to tell you what I know to be true. Through faith anything is possible. You can go as high as you want in this life. What God has done for me and so many others, He can do for you.  Only believe. ONLY BELIEVE.
God bless you.

What Have My 30’s Taught Me So Far?

Let’s see, how can I explain this?  I feel as if there has been a secret society this whole time and I just got invited to join.  It’s as if a weird sense of enlightenment has come over me.  I have more drive, more clarity and more guts!  Dreams that I have always looked at as far into my future, are closer than ever before and I can taste a change coming.  I look around and see so many people living a day to day routine, just like a robot and I find myself silently screaming at them like, “WAKE UP! DON’T YOU REALIZE HOW BORING YOUR LIFE IS?!”

Furthermore, I see sprinkles of other people around me who are getting the same itch to scream at the robots.  I’m uncertain of what’s specifically happening, but it’s true what they say about how everything changes in your 30’s.  If you jumped from your 20’s to your 30’s and felt nothing, I’m almost convinced that you’re missing a queue.  Maybe a big life change needs to happen in order for you to jump out of your monotony.

Dreaming…

I’m at a pivotal place in my life right now. How do I know? I can feel it. Everything that I had known to be a custom, a habit and a trademark is beginning to take on a new form. The people around me are changing, friendships are becoming more dynamic and honest, daily habits have become boring.  I’ve been here before, remember? I explained everything to you guys in my post, “One Day I Woke Up & Was Bored With Life!” and I expressed how I felt like I needed to make a change.  Well, here I am again.  Learning that life is unpredictable. We can plan, but no matter what, there is always a higher power that has the last say. I haven’t been taking this sudden change too well, to say the least. I could feel the stress in my shoulders and I literally had knots up and down my back. Abruptly, the things that I had known and built a routine around, suddenly altered and I wasn’t sure what to do.  Even as I write this, I’m still uncertain of what my next steps will be, but I am in a position to not just dream…I have the chance to start living.

Do You Need Some Inspiration? Here You Go!

It’s been a while since I’ve written an inspirational post and I am definitely in need of one, so this is not only for you…it’s also for me!  Here goes nothing:

This month has been CRAZY!  The word “stress” is definitely an understatement.  I’ve been so stressed that I can feel it in my shoulders, in my back, my head…just everywhere.  I will spare you the details and focus on the lessons of said stress.  For starters, I’m learning not to put my faith in man and when I say “man” I mean people in general.  I’m almost forced to only rely on God and prayer and I think that’s what I’m supposed to be doing because it’s helping.  I’m finding myself being super sensitive with just about everything, so prayer offers some solid alone time with just me and the big guy upstairs.  I need to refocus, set up a game plan and work towards certain goals within the upcoming months.

Is that enough of a pity party for you all?  Ok, it is for me so that’s where it ends (lol).  All I’m saying is, just go through the motions of whatever you may be experiencing and start praying hard.  When you feel yourself getting angry or frustrated at the world then it’s time to take a step back and just relax.  As the saying goes, it could always be worse so search for perspective.  That’s what I’m trying to do.

The great thing about the entertainment world is that it gives us a chance to watch young actors and actresses grow right before our very eyes.  Back when television was filled with quality shows almost every night, the viewers had the luxury of seeing an array of skin color, mixed genders, comedy, drama, etc., but what about now?  What happened to all of those roles?  What happened to all of that diversity?  Reagan Gomez seems to have an idea! Is it Possible to Appreciate the Journey Without the Struggle?

I’m going to keep this short and sweet for you all today!  This is a topic that lingers in my mind on a regular basis.  You see some celebrities and successful people who gave it their ALL.  They have a “story” that perfectly outlines their struggles and you can tell that they are extremely grateful for what they have overcome and where they are now.  Then you see those individuals who just so happen to be walking in a mall and get discovered by Tyra Banks.  Or they have the “look” that a casting director wants in their next film.  Do these people appreciate the chance to become a star or a true success story without the struggle?  Let me know what you think by leaving a comment or by simply clicking “yes” or “no” in the poll below!

DC’s Summer Youth Employment Program

Going after your dreams and making a difference isn’t always about being in the entertainment industry.  There are many ways to work locally and make a change in young people’s lives no matter where you are.  Since I was a teen, I always loved working with children and youth; that has always been my passion!  My first meaningful mentoring opportunity was while I was home from college, living in Philadelphia and I worked with youth who had either dropped out of high school, weren’t ready for college or simply wanted to make money to help provide for their family.  They got the opportunity to work with local businesses and on days when they did not work, myself and other counselors ran training programs/workshops to assist them with resume composition, interview practice, work attire selection, etc.  My life was forever changed!

DC has the same employment program and they are accepting applications/resumes beginning on 1/25/13 at 12:15pm!  Please pass the word along to DC youth, ages 14-21.  This could be the step they need to change their life around or to simply learn the importance of hardwork.  Click on the link below and let’s start to enrich our youngsters.  BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE!!!
