Top Theaters Decide Against Showing Sony Movie, “The Interview”

image

Everyone was looking forward to the Christmas release of Sony’s new movie, The Interview, featuring Seth Rogen and James Franco.  The movie received criticism for its daring plot that focuses on assassinating North Korean dictator, Kim Jong-un.

There was a recent hack into Sony’s database that allegedly brought attention to email threats they were receiving because of the upcoming controversial release.

Major theaters, such as AMC, Regal, Cinemark and Cineplex have all dropped the movie from their line-up due to the security threats.

Rest in Paradise Robin Williams

We never know what someone else is going through behind closed doors.  Depression.  Anxiety.  Lonlieness.  Drug addiction.  We assume that because we see them smiling,  that they aren’t walking a dark path.

Seeing an awesome actor bring various roles to life for years was our privilege.

I just watched one of Robin Williams’ movies,  The Angriest Man in Brooklyn, and it was awesome.  So,  to hear that he may have taken his own life was a huge shock.  People die everyday.  People commit suicide everyday.  It’s just something about being able to see someone grow and struggle in the public eye and then one day they’re just gone.   May God have mercy on his soul.

Zendaya Replaced by Alexandra Shipp in Aaliyah Biopic

image

I posted a few weeks ago about Zendaya Coleman being cast as the leading role in the controversial biopic of late singer, Aaliyah.  Since then,  she’s gracefully bowed out due to some harsh criticism from Aaliyah fans and push back from the singer’s family.

It’s no secret that Aaliyah’s family is doing everything they can to halt production and have publicly stated that they will block Lifetime from obtaining rights to the singer’s music.   The family has gone on record and is determined to not only cast an A-list actress as the lead, but to have it released on the big screen, similar to Tina Turner’s,  What’s Love Got to Do With It.

Despite the controversy,  Lifetime has moved forward in casting actress Alexandra Shipp as the new lead and talk show host, Wendy Williams, has spilled the beans about being the new Executive Producer for the film.  Shipp was recently named the lead actress in VH1’s Drumline sequel and she’s been featured in Disney’s,  Victorious.

To put rumors to rest, Zendaya released a statement in a series of videos via Instagram,  which stated:

Let me just explain something. The reason why I chose not to do the Aaliyah movie had nothing to do with the haters or people telling me that I couldn’t do it, I wasn’t talented enough, or I wasn’t black enough. It had absolutely nothing to do with that.”

“The main reasons were that the production value wasn’t there, there were complications with the music rights, and I just felt like it wasn’t being handled delicately considering the situation. And I tried my best to reach out to the family on my own, and I wrote a letter, but I was unable to do so; therefore, I felt not really morally okay with moving forward with the project.”

“With all that being said, congratulations to the new woman playing Aaliyah; I only hope she does not have to deal with half the hate that I had to deal with. And remember that we are all human beings trying to do what we love to do. Let’s practice motivation and love; not discrimination and hate. All right?”

Either way,  I’m neutral on whether the leading role should be A-list or D; I just hope they do the film the right way and tastefully.   I also hope the family isn’t being driven by greed.  We shall see how this unfolds.

Zendaya Casted in Aaliyah Movie

It’s been in the works for some years now, but the wheels are finally set in motion to begin filming an Aaliyah biopic.  There were a few speculations on which young lady would be granted the honor to portray the young, fallen star and the verdict has been set.  Disney star, Zendaya, will be featured in the upcoming film.

The challenge will be great, but I’m sure she will do the role much justice!

FINALLY!  There is some headway in the production of Fifty Shades of Grey!  We have been patiently waiting for a sneak peak, a glimpse, even a sign of who was cast as the infamous Mr. Grey!  Well, the lucky man is supposedly Jamie Dornan (pictured below) and the first installment of the trilogy is set to be released on Valentine’s Day 2015.  I am eagerly anticipating all three films as I was a huge fan of E.L. James’ masterpieces.  Here is the hottie, Jamie Dornan!

Michael B. Jordan is Breaking Out On the Scene Once Again!

Source: GQ

Source: GQ

Michael B. Jordan is by far one of the best young, black actors in Hollywood.  He is best known for his breakout role in the hit series, The Wire.  He most recently stole hearts in the gripping film, Fruitvale Station where he depicted Oscar Grant; a young black man who was wrongfully shot and killed by transit police in the Bay Area.  GQ has honored Michael as Breakout Man of the Year; a very well-deserved honor.

The GQ article describes his iconic work and the pain felt around the world when his character was killed off in The Wire.  It states:

Now, again, a few earnest souls in our film industry are taking steps from the beaten path to present the human-scale cost of our racial pathology. And the right actor is again required to take a bullet in such a way that we will feel the loss in all of its intricate detail.

No surprise who gets the call. Now Michael B. Jordan, an actor honed by a decade of meaningful work, turns in a performance that surrounds the doomed Oscar Grant, making him seem idiosyncratic yet average, ordinary yet precious. That’s the power of Fruitvale.

“If one day the speed kills me, do not cry because I was smiling.”

Paul Walker

It is beyond sad to know that Hollywood lost such a young soul this weekend.  Here, we are paying tribute, as it is a shock when a life is taken so unexpectedly.  As many around the world now know, Paul Walker was best known for his role in the Fast & Furious series.  With his death, many are left to wonder what the future holds for the popular film series that also stars Vin Diesel and Tyrese Gibson.

Walker died on the scene of a crash on November 30th where he was a passenger, along side his racing teammate Roger Rodus.  Speed was a factor when the car slammed into a pole and was quickly engulfed in flames, trapping both Walker and Rodus.  The irony of the cause of death is the least of our worries, but something that cannot be ignored.  May both Paul Walker and Roger Rodus rest in peace.

The Best Man Holiday…Here’s What I Think!

best man holiday

Straight and to the point…go see it!  It is so refreshing to see a great black film with good actors and a strong storyline.  There were some surprises that I don’t want to give away, but know that all of your emotions will be tugged at.  Also, Morris Chestnut…YAASSSS HONEY!  He did an amazing job and looked as though he was in the best shape of his life (ladies, trust me…you don’t want to miss it)!  His roles are usually static with no real emotion, but he did some of his best work in The Best Man Holiday.

Normally, a sequel doesn’t hold up as well as the first, but in this case it is just as good, if not better.  Please go support the film and also if you’ve already seen it, let us know what you think!
