Did Dr. Dre Sell “Beats” to Apple?

Who would have thunk it?  Many, many moons ago, hip-hop was considered taboo in a lot of ways.  Other cultures didn’t understand, nor did they want to be open minded to the lyrical content and passion ensued in the up-and-coming genre.  Present day, the industry is being saved by hip-hop music (ironic, right?) and is being praised by all walks of life.  If you go to a rap concert, many times you’ll see that most of the attendees are white, not black.  This week, another gold star can be added to the hip-hop gods accomplishment list because Dr. Dre may have done the unthinkable.

Some years back, rapper Dr. Dre, started Beats Electronics and released the very popular Beats headphones.  Many celebrities and star athletes have adopted his brand and taken it to new heights by promoting customized headphones, diamond-studded headphones, or even their team colors and logo on headphones.  It is being rumored that Dr. Dre may have become the FIRST hip-hop billionaire by selling Beats for a reported $3.2 billion to Apple.  If this is true, he will hold the number 1 spot on the Forbes list of richest hip-hop artists, over Diddy.

When you start making business deals with Apple, it’s safe to say, “Momma, I made it!”  Congrats to Dr. Dre!  He can inspire us all to believe that ANYTHING is possible!

Is J.R. Smith the New A.I.?

There is nothing sadder and more disappointing than to see an athlete with God-given abilities, waste them without so much as a flinch.  I’m all for living life on the edge and doing things in an unconventional way, but when you are given chance after chance and take that for granted, that’s a problem.  Most young men can only dream of playing in the NBA, so why would anyone not appreciate the chance to live out such an opportunity?  It drives me crazy when I see young (black) athletes living up to the stereotype.

If you have such great skill, why is it necessary to purposely untie the shoe laces on your opponents’ sneakers while your teammate is shooting a free throw?  Why do you need to skip practice to go shopping?  WHY is it necessary to charge $3,000 of room service (that you didn’t even eat) to your team’s bill, only as some sick joke to see if they would keep delivering it.

It just doesn’t make sense to me!  It’s all too familiar as well.  We’ve seen strange behavior from all-star  athlete, Allen Iverson, when he was in his prime.  A.I. was one of the greatest to play, but his attitude and reputation always preceded him.  From his ball-hogging antics, to his rebellious behavior to organization rules and skipping practices, it almost seems like he has been reincarnated in the league.  What’s even crazier is, Allen Iverson regretted some of those bad decisions and you would think someone like J.R. Smith would want to do it differently.

I hope Smith gets it together before it’s too late.  Otherwise, he’ll just be another talent wasted and ego bruised.  I genuinely hope that he can find his way because the clock is ticking and people are noticing his bad-boy ways.  I’m rooting for him to get it together, quickly!  I like to keep my posts as positive as possible, but to see such behavior is disheartening.  J.R. Smith has a golden opportunity to reach his full potential and enjoy the feeling of being one of the greats, but it is slowly slipping away.

Did You Watch VH1’s TLC Movie?

If you were like me last night, then you tuned in to the much anticipated TLC Movie that aired on VH1.  Let me dive right in!  I LOVED IT! Of course, there were cheesy, sub-par acting moments, but overall it was a success and mainly because of the awesome casting choices.  Surprisingly, Lil’ Mama was the best look-alike in her role as Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes and Keke Palmer as Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas was a close second, with Drew Sidora as Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins coming in third.

Growing up on the female power group, TLC, I had chills for the majority of the movie while I sang along to classics such as, “What About Your Friends” and “Creep.”  There are no words that can truly describe how influential they were, not only in the Pop industry, but to young girls everywhere.  They educated a whole generation about safe sex and being confident, while sexy.  The toughest part was watching everything that they went through behind the scenes and knowing their reactions to tragedies that stuck them.  After watching an entire movie of actresses portraying one of my favorite female groups, it brought tears to my eyes to see clips of the actual trio at the end.  Kudos to VH1 for shedding light on what I believe is the real depiction of what happened during their rise to fame.  To throw you back, here is the actual What About Your Friends video, as well as the trailer for VH1’s TLC movie.
