Eagles’ LeSean McCoy Leaves 20 Cent Tip (Oh Snap!)

As an Eagles fan, this is a hard post to write, but it is my journalistic duty to cover the story regardless of my personal bias (tear).  Eagles’ player, LeSean McCoy, is under fire for a recent incident that took place at a popular Philly restaurant, PYT, earlier this week.  His normal nice guy demeanor must have been on a “BYE” because McCoy supposedly left a 20-cent tip for his server (oh snap!).  Since then, social media has been lit up with every response, including a copy of his signed receipt.  Now, as a bartender, I can relate to getting stiffed on a tip.  However, it’s usually from a disgruntled guest, a cheap a$$ or maybe even someone who is just having a bad day.  I could not imagine what my reaction would be if a MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR NFL PLAYER left me less than a $1.00 on a $60.00 tab.

As the world began to take notice, actor Charlie Sheen decided to chime in via Twitter and publicly pledge $1,000.00 to McCoy’s server.  He tweeted:

Charlie-Sheen-Tweet

McCoy didn’t feel much remorse for his actions and actually defended his choice by saying:

Just to be honest, I tip on my service, and there’s a difference between good service and bad service and just having a bad day…There’s a big difference with between being rude and just disrespectful. That’s how that works.  Listen, anybody that knows me knows I’m not disrespectful. Any restaurant that I go around in Philadelphia, I tip very well. I’m very respectful. You check on that restaurant and everybody is talking bad about that place…You can’t just disrespect somebody and [expect] them to tip you. I don’t care who the person is. That’s why I left my card, so they could see my name. Simple as that.

As far as his reaction to Sheen leaving a thousand dollars for the server, he added, “That’s cool…I’m happy he’s finally doing something positive.”

The owner of PYT, Tommy Up, was the first to spread the word about this whole ordeal when he posted a pic of McCoy’s receipt on the restaurant’s public Facebook page.  He also wrote a statement that read:

I would like to address the LeSean McCoy tipping situation and our role in it.  For starters, I take total and complete responsibility for sharing this receipt. It was not our server’s decision, it was mine. I am to blame.  I decided to take action after some serious thought. And while I’d like to apologize to Mr McCoy, I cannot in good conscience do so. I stand by my actions one hundred percent. Mr McCoy and his three companions came into my place on Monday afternoon, and immediately the whole staff was excited. Mr McCoy is a skilled athlete and is one of our beloved Philadelphia Eagles. A true Philly legend and a sports hero. Understandably my staff was really pumped, especially on the heels of they terrific win the day before. (Go Eagles!). Mr McCoy and his friend sat inside at a booth next to my management and next to me. They were given excellent service. Impeccable service. If anything, our server was a little nervous as was our food runner, because they are big, big fans. He and his group, from the moment they sat down, were verbally abusive to our staff in the most insulting ways. The derogatory statements about women and their sheer contempt for the staff serving them wasn’t the end, however. After Mr McCoy and his group left I looked over and saw their server, my friend, with his head bowed down and with a very confused look on his face. I took the receipt out of his hand and I couldn’t believe that anyone could be so callous. Mr McCoy had left a .03% tip for our staff. Our staff that was beyond excited to see him walk into our burger joint and was excited to serve him. That’s twenty cents on a tab of over $60. Twenty cents that our server has to split with the food runner and the bartender. Two dimes from an insulting multimillionaire. I bet Mr McCoy is usually an awesome dude. And everyone has their bad days. But I’m from Philly and have had the pleasure of meeting many of our bad ass sports heroes. Ron Jaworski I met as a kid and I love. Iverson I loved. Mike Schmidt! You name ’em. I love all of our athletes past and present. Hometown heroes who treat those below them with some respect. And maybe Mr McCoy was having a “bad day” after his big victory all that, but the reports of him receiving “bad service” is a complete slanderous lie, and my crew here is better than that and deserves better than that. At the end of the day, I did what I felt my heart told me to do. And I don’t want anything from Mr McCoy, but…maybe an apology to his server who gave him excellent service would be cool. Again, I am the owner and I take full responsibility for my actions. Eagles fans, I feel ya. Id be pissed too. But a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do and stick up for his friends. Hate mail should be directed to tommy@pytburger.com. I will respond to you right after I catch up on this mornings hate mail.

Rest in Paradise Robin Williams

We never know what someone else is going through behind closed doors.  Depression.  Anxiety.  Lonlieness.  Drug addiction.  We assume that because we see them smiling,  that they aren’t walking a dark path.

Seeing an awesome actor bring various roles to life for years was our privilege.

I just watched one of Robin Williams’ movies,  The Angriest Man in Brooklyn, and it was awesome.  So,  to hear that he may have taken his own life was a huge shock.  People die everyday.  People commit suicide everyday.  It’s just something about being able to see someone grow and struggle in the public eye and then one day they’re just gone.   May God have mercy on his soul.

First Black Cinderella On Broadway

Congrats are in order for the lovely Keke Palmer! She will have the amazing honor of playing the first Black Cinderella on Broadway.

Palmer recently became the youngest talk show host,  so it seems that she sees no boundaries when chasing her dreams (as it should be).

She recently took to Twitter to express her excitement stating:

I’m sooooo excited to be doing broadway for the first time, as Cinderella!! DREAMS DO COME TRUE!!”

Zendaya Replaced by Alexandra Shipp in Aaliyah Biopic

image

I posted a few weeks ago about Zendaya Coleman being cast as the leading role in the controversial biopic of late singer, Aaliyah.  Since then,  she’s gracefully bowed out due to some harsh criticism from Aaliyah fans and push back from the singer’s family.

It’s no secret that Aaliyah’s family is doing everything they can to halt production and have publicly stated that they will block Lifetime from obtaining rights to the singer’s music.   The family has gone on record and is determined to not only cast an A-list actress as the lead, but to have it released on the big screen, similar to Tina Turner’s,  What’s Love Got to Do With It.

Despite the controversy,  Lifetime has moved forward in casting actress Alexandra Shipp as the new lead and talk show host, Wendy Williams, has spilled the beans about being the new Executive Producer for the film.  Shipp was recently named the lead actress in VH1’s Drumline sequel and she’s been featured in Disney’s,  Victorious.

To put rumors to rest, Zendaya released a statement in a series of videos via Instagram,  which stated:

image

Let me just explain something. The reason why I chose not to do the Aaliyah movie had nothing to do with the haters or people telling me that I couldn’t do it, I wasn’t talented enough, or I wasn’t black enough. It had absolutely nothing to do with that.”

“The main reasons were that the production value wasn’t there, there were complications with the music rights, and I just felt like it wasn’t being handled delicately considering the situation. And I tried my best to reach out to the family on my own, and I wrote a letter, but I was unable to do so; therefore, I felt not really morally okay with moving forward with the project.”

“With all that being said, congratulations to the new woman playing Aaliyah; I only hope she does not have to deal with half the hate that I had to deal with. And remember that we are all human beings trying to do what we love to do. Let’s practice motivation and love; not discrimination and hate. All right?”

Either way,  I’m neutral on whether the leading role should be A-list or D; I just hope they do the film the right way and tastefully.   I also hope the family isn’t being driven by greed.  We shall see how this unfolds.

40 Year Old Mom Becomes Saints Cheerleader!

Now I’ve seen it all!  This is just faaaaabulous.  Kriste Lewis is 40 and a mother of two and just so happens to be making history.

A dance instructor recently fulfilled a lifelong dream by becoming a New Orleans Saints cheerleader and her age didn’t stop her. Kudos to Kriste and even more kudos to a classy organization for giving her a fair shot.

What dream will you choose to fulfill today?

Why I Have Newfound Respect for Rapper, Wale

image

Social media has been booming lately.  Between rapper, Meek Mill, going to jail and him dissing his fellow MMG mate, Wale.  I usually read about stuff like this to stay in the know about what’s happening in the entertainment business, but I typically don’t write about it. I feel all writing does is fuel a dangerous fire,  i.e. Tupac vs Biggie.

However,  I chose to highlight this particular “beef” story, not because of the hype,  but because I wanted to focus on how amazing I felt after reading Wale’s response. There is hope.

Long story short, Wale was called out for not supporting Meek’s upcoming album release via Twitter (so stupid) and was labeled as a “hater” and fake. Meek also went as far as saying Wale wasn’t “MMG”.   For a grown man to even feel the need to call another grown man out about something so childish,  makes you wonder how tight the screws are.   Now,  I’m from Philly (like Meek Mill) so I get the passion and sense of respect you have for those in your life.  People from Philly take things personal,  that’s just how we’re wired.   But,  when you begin to sell records internationally and make a name for yourself in this world, you must elevate your mind and behavior.

I believe all rappers and business-minded folks should take a page out of Wale’s notebook after reading his response to Meek Mill.  Here’s the classy Instagram snap back:

Few weeks ago. (7w) I posted this .but ok. Movin along . My Avi always changed when it’s THAT time .. Ok that’s not enough y’all see “razor ramon” post on his no. But I don’t care.. I never wanted anybody to think we take ourselves THAT serious. (Were rappers )I don’t need to take anybody shine.. Or hate on anybody . I walk in a completely different world .. I’m me and I’ll be me and do this shyt wit my “dew” till I don’t wanna do it. I encourage you to wake up soon as you find time. This was a post about #nothin”
